Our History
From a single tree in 1980 to one of the largest free holiday displays in the country.
A San José Tradition Since 1980
Christmas in the Park began in 1980 with a simple idea: bring the community together to celebrate the holiday season in the heart of downtown San José. What started as a single decorated tree has grown into one of the largest free holiday events in the country.
For more than four decades, Christmas in the Park has welcomed over one million guests each season to Plaza de César Chávez, transforming downtown into a festive wonderland of decorated trees, animated displays, and holiday magic — all free and open to the public.
